From A Beneficiary To A Proactive Leader

Mr. Surajmal and Mrs. Seva Devi, both facing a 75% disability in both legs, encountered huge challenges in sustaining their family. They have two daughters, both selected as beneficiaries of a project in 2017. Relying primarily on a meagre Viklang (Physically Challenged) pension, they struggled to meet their daily needs and often resorted to loans or seeking support from family and neighbors.

In 2017, Mr. Surajmal became a beneficiary of a project and received a grocery shop worth Rs. 5000/-. Alongside his small home-based business, he consistently saved Rs. 2000/- each month. The EFICOR BHIL project played a crucial role in transforming their lives, inspiring them to focus on income generation and their children's education. They accessed housing schemes, actively engaged in community meetings, and expanded their understanding of government initiatives.

Awareness of a government scooter scheme for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) through EFICOR's training sessions prompted their application, resulting in the acquisition of Hero Maestro Edge scooters. This milestone empowered Mr. Surajmal, who transitioned from a beneficiary to a proactive leader within the Community-Based Organization (CBO). He raised awareness about government schemes, facilitated access for others, and advocated for village development in gram sabha meetings.

The scooter not only improved mobility but also facilitated their children's education. Mr. Surajmal's influence led to enhancements in the local Anganwadi center, ensuring regular mid-day meals for children. His story exemplifies the transformative impact of awareness, empowerment, and community engagement, enabling the successful utilization of various government programs.
