"Our Response To The Pandemic"

Posted on July 31, 2020   |

In response to the spread of COVID-19, the Government of India declared a nationwide lockdown to go into effect from March 25, 2020. Unfortunately, India’s residents were given only a few hours notice and people were not prepared for one of the world’s strictest lockdowns. Daily-wage earners suddenly found themselves unable to work and with no income. Due to the short notice given and the suspension of all bus and train travel, migrant workers were unable to return to their home villages and instead were left in cities, fending for themselves with very limited resources. It did not take long for food and money to run out, forcing many migrant workers to make the decision to walk hundreds of kilometres to their home villages. Two months after the lockdown was ordered, igrants still continue to flee the cities and those who have remained in the cities struggle to survive. Despite the lockdown, the virus continues to spread, creating challenges for poor communities who are without access to adequate healthcare. Soon after the lockdown went into effect, EFICOR launched an emergency response to help vulnerable families that had lost their source of income. Combined with this response, EFICOR has worked to build the awareness amongst poor and vulnerable communities regarding the precautionary measures that need to be taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

EFICOR has been able to reach 53,054 households with emergency measures in a short span of two months.
