Dear friends, Greetings from EFICOR!
The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India is leaving a devastating trail. Coronavirus infections rose to a record 34.49,644 active cases as on 2 May, 2021. The death toll is constantly rising and the number of deaths in India due to COVID-19 has reached 2,15,542 as on 2 May 2021.1 Even as we are still recovering from the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, we have been caught in this strong second wave of the pandemic which has caused an unimaginable humanitarian crisis especially for the many poor and vulnerable families: Although a national lockdown has not been announced, many states in India have announced curfew and lockdown. This has created job loss, food insecurity and economic vulnerability for the millions of urban informal workers and daily wage earners. Many of the communities in EFICOR project locations are in need of food and nutrition. Apart from the migrant workers, many families have lost the breadwinners and widows, orphans, elderly, aged and women headed families are affected by the pandemic. Many poor marginalised and vulnerable workers are severely impacted due to risks associated not only with their livelihood but risks with regard to their safety and health. They need basic hygiene and sanitation and medical supplies.
EFICOR is planning to start our response by supporting 12,000 families in Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha where we are currently working. We plan to support landless families, migrant worker’s families, women headed houses, widows, persons with disability, elderly and orphaned children. A package of Rs. 2000 per family for one time food aid and Rs 7500 for Cash for work for one month livelihood is planned.
Join us in supporting these families.
