The Global Slavery Index estimates that on any given day in 2016 there were nearly 8 million people living in modern slavery in India. The most current available data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) indicate that there were 8,132 reported cases of human trafficking across India in 2016. Nearly 60% of those who were trafficked were under the age of 18 years of age. Many of those who are trafficked are lured with the promise of a job and given cash up front as a wage advance. Once transported to the job site the workers lose their freedom, and are forced to work long hours as they slowly pay off their debt.
EFICOR works with law enforcement agencies to rescue victims of bonded labour and forced sexual exploitation. Once the survivors have been rescued EFICOR provides an aftercare program seeking to rehabilitate and restore the individuals to their families and communities.
