Clean Drinking Water Brings Hope to Pahari Tola

Sita Kumari, a 19-year-old community taskforce member, lives in Pahari Tola village, Gopinagar gram panchayat, in the Kadwa block of Katihar district. Her family of five are part of the Malto tribe (ST community). They own no agricultural land and face recurring challenges during the rainy season, when annual floods submerge the village.

Floodwaters often contaminate low-lying tube wells, allowing harmful substances to enter the water supply. This results in unsafe drinking water and frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases—particularly affecting children, women, and the elderly.

Recognizing this need, the Disaster Management Committee (DMC) and taskforce members advocated for a solution. Through the DRMR Project in Katihar, a high-raised community tube well was installed in Pahari Tola. Now, all 41 families in the village have access to clean, iron-free, and safe drinking water—even during floods.

When floods hit again in September and October 2024, the health impacts were significantly reduced. Villagers, especially pregnant women, children, and seniors, reported feeling healthier and more satisfied with their water quality.
