Project Closure: EFICOR's Bhoi Community Resilience Project - Post Cyclone Fani

Posted on April 3, 2024   |

The Bhoi Community Resilience Project in Krishan Prasad block of Puri district, Odisha was initiated in 2019 in response to Cyclone Fani's impact on the coastal areas of Odisha, affecting over 16.5 million people across 14 districts. EFICOR commenced relief operations and later transitioned into a full-fledged project focusing on livelihood and resilience in four villages with support from Wipro Foundation: Icchapur Bhoisahi, Nuagaon Bhoishi, Satapada Bhoisahi, and Navbadi Bhavasahi of Krishnaprasad block in Puri district. The project received support from Wipro initially and later from ERIKS Sweden as the project transitioned from relief to resilience.

Sixteen Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were formed, with 148 women actively participating in daily saving practices and availing loans from banks. Disaster Mitigation Committees (DMCs) were established in the villages, equipped with task forces trained by the SDM unit to handle disaster situations and preparedness measures. Additionally, four Child Parliaments (CP) were formed, facilitating discussions on various village issues, child education, and environmental concerns. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Puri has played a vital role in building these CPs and equipped them to a graduation level.

A significant issue discussed in CPs was pollution in Chilika Lake, a major livelihood source for the local community. Children initiated awareness programs advocating for environmental protection, including reducing plastic usage, increasing plantations, and conserving water and biodiversity. Their efforts were recognized and appreciated by government officials, particularly CWC.

The Bhoi project closure program took place on March 23, 2024, attended by EFICOR Board member Mr. El Yanger Aier, IFS (Retd), Executive Director - Mr. Ramesh Babu, and government officials from- Mr. Ajit Mohapatra – Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Mr. Subha Narayan Satpati – DCP and, Mr. Ramashanker Patra - Social activist and Advocate. Child Parliament members presented skits and dances showcasing the project's impact. Despite the project closure, the Child Parliament children and teachers have pledged to continue their work and government officials have assured them of their support.
