At the age of 26 Tabassum is already widowed. She had been married to her husband for only three years when he suddenly fell sick and died, leaving her to raise their 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son. She found it very difficult to provide for the basic needs of her family. She tried to claim the widow’s pension twice with the help of agents, but they took her money and then cheated her. Tabassum became discouraged and desperate.
Our project officer, Bhansingh met Tabassum and on finding out that she hadn't received the widow pension he helped her fill out another form, collate her identity papers, official documents and bank details, and then accompanied her to the government office. She received her first pension amounting to Rs.1500 on the 1st of January 2017 and has been getting Rs.2500 every month since then. This small contribution has helped her provide for the basic needs of her children.
Sometimes people just need someone who they can trust to guide them and accompany them as they go through official processes.
