Preparing to earn a living

Govindasamy, a fisherman from Muzhukuthurai has been provided with a temporary shelter by EFICOR. He is mending his nets to go back to fishing, hoping that he would be provided with a “thoni” (a boat) by the government. Before the Tsunami, on an average he used to earn even about Rs.1000/- to 2000/- a day. His wife cooks the mid-day meal in a government school in the neighbouring village. His two younger daughters -Venbu and Kannimozhi after having attended sewing classes in Killai, a nearby village, were earning about Rs.500/- per month stitching clothes for women in their village. But after the Tsunami having washed away their sewing machine they are now idle without any income.

I dream to become a doctor…..

Fifteen year old Sahai Sheldon, who lives in Maraimadi West, Colachel lost his mother to the Tsunami while he, his father and younger sister survived. He was in the beach when the Tsunami hit Colachel, he ran and climbed the roof of his house. His father is a fisherman, like most of the Maraimadi residents. Studying in 10th Standard at the St Mary’s School, Colachel, he attends the coaching classes supported by EFICOR-ESAF for the Tsunami affected children. He finds the atmosphere in the school more conducive to study than in his home. He dreams to become a doctor.
