ORISSA FLOODS

Orissa, one of the most disaster prone areas of the country, once again reeled under heavy flooding from 27th August. According to reports, 23 out of 30 districts have been badly affected with road and communication infrastructure being cut off throwing normal life out of gear. Deaths have been reported, standing crops have been badly damaged and the contamination of drinking water has led to several diarrhoea cases.

As in earlier disasters the EFICOR relief team immediately responded. By 2nd Sept, a 5 member team from EFICOR were on site for a rapid assessment of the affected areas. 57 villages in 5 districts of Kendrapada, Bolangir, Angul, Jagatsingpur and Kalahandi were assessed. This was followed by an emergency relief intervention for about 5000 families through the provision of food and other essential items. Plans for the second phase of rehabilitation are underway.

EFICOR seeks support and funding for this second phase of intervention. If you are able to help, a full proposal can be obtained.
