Mrs.
Christy Malto w/o Mr. Dilip Malto is from Amjora village,
Mandro block, Sahibganj district. Their village lies 8 km
away from the main road, on top of a hill. There is no road
connecting their village to the main road, the only way to
reach their village is to walk.
She is a
member of one of the SHGs initiated by EFICOR. Initially,
though she had savings she was not aware of the amount, and
she had to depend upon other men who could count and
calculate to tell her the amount of her savings.
When
an awareness programme on literacy was conducted in their
village, she showed keen interest in the programme. However
others in the village were not interested. For any literacy
class to start there has to be at least 10-15 students. Her
keenness drove her to motive other like her to enrol in the
literacy class.
When
a literacy class was started, she attended the classes
regularly and worked hard in her studies. Her enthusiasm and
hard labour made her literate, now she is able to sign her
name and read words and calculate. She is the first women in
her village who can read and write. Now she does not need to
depend on others to know her savings, in fact she assists
other women to calculate their savings.
She
is now encouraging and assisting other women to read and
write. She has been a great source of encouragement for
other women in and near her village. |
